What Is the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP)?
The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is a federal dental benefit that helps eligible Canadian residents access a wide range of oral health care services at a reduced cost.
The plan is funded by the Government of Canada and administered by Sun Life on behalf of Health Canada.
Important: The CDCP is not the same as completely free dental care. Depending on your adjusted family net income, you may still have a co-payment, additional charges above the CDCP fee schedule, or costs for services that are not covered under the plan.
In simple terms, the CDCP:
Helps eligible Canadians afford essential dental care
Applies to people without access to private dental insurance
Covers a broad range of preventive, diagnostic, and restorative services
May still require co-payments or additional charges depending on your income and treatment
Who Can Apply for the CDCP?
You may qualify if all of the following apply:
Regular dental visits can:
- You are a Canadian resident for tax purposes
- You do not have access to private dental insurance through work, school, a pension, a family member, or an individual plan
- You and your spouse or common-law partner (if applicable) have filed your most recent tax return in Canada
- Your adjusted family net income is under $90,000
If you are not sure whether you qualify, you can confirm your eligibility through the Government of Canada website – canada.ca/dental before booking your appointment.
CDCP Eligibility Rollout
The federal government is rolling out CDCP coverage in phases, including:
Seniors aged 65 and older
Adults eligible for the Disability Tax Credit
Children under 18
Other eligible adults without private insurance
If you are unsure about your eligibility timeline, our team can help explain the process.
How CDCP Coverage Works
Coverage Based on Income
The amount covered depends on your adjusted family net income.| Adjusted Family Net Income | CDCP Pays | Your Co-Payment |
|---|---|---|
| Under $70,000 | 100% | 0% |
| $70,000 – $79,999 | 60% | 40% |
| $80,000 – $89,999 | 40% | 60% |
Patients may also be responsible for:
- Their co-payment portion, if applicable
- Services that the CDCP does not cover
- Any difference between the CDCP fee schedule and the fees charged for treatment
What Services Are Covered Under CDCP?
Coverage is based on the national CDCP schedule and may include several preventive, diagnostic, and restorative dental services.
Preventive & Diagnostic Services
- ● Dental exams and checkups
- ● Digital dental X-rays
- ● Professional dental cleanings
- ● Fluoride treatments
- ● Dental sealants for children
- ● Oral cancer screenings
These services help maintain healthy teeth and prevent dental problems.
Basic Dental Services
CDCP may also cover common restorative treatments such as:
- ● Tooth-colored dental fillings
- ● Root canal therapy (on eligible teeth)
- ● Simple and some surgical tooth extractions
- ● Gum disease treatment and periodontal therapy
These services help restore oral health and prevent further complications.
Major Dental Services
Some major dental treatments may also be covered but often require pre-authorization, including:
- ● Certain dental crowns
- ● Bridges or dentures
- ● Some oral surgery procedures
Our dental team will help determine if pre-authorization is required before treatment begins.
Sedation & Anesthesia
In certain cases, CDCP may cover sedation options when medically required, including:
- ● Nitrous oxide (laughing gas)
- ● Oral sedation
- ● General anesthesia (case-dependent)
Some services may require preauthorization, and not every treatment is covered for every patient. We recommend confirming your coverage before starting treatment.
